Late 18th Century Print—Walpolian Garden Shrine with Traces of Beckfordian Fontilism
One Thousand Years of Gothic Architecture: A Collection of Inspired Drawings
Artist: Stephen Wohleber
Explore Stephen Wohleber’s hand drawn architectural buildings from 10th to Mid-19th Century, each one described as though to be made as a reliquary, or decorative object in miniature, as though each were a life-size drawing of the intended structure. This 18th Century print depicts a Walpolian garden shrine with acute traces of Beckfordian Fontilism made of zinc with doors and window tracery of brass upon a base of finest porcelain, nicely glazed. The intensely brilliant chromolithographic colouration was added at a later date, somewhat towards the last quarter of the 19th century in an attempt to restore it to its originally supposed appearance.
