14th Century Print—Alsatian Convent Church
One Thousand Years of Gothic Architecture: A Collection of Inspired Drawings
Artist: Stephen Wohleber
Explore Stephen Wohleber’s hand drawn architectural buildings from 10th to Mid-19th Century, each one described as though to be made as a reliquary, or decorative object in miniature, as though each were a life-size drawing of the intended structure. This 14th Century print depicts an Alsatian convent church with cloister. To be carved from boxwood in miniature in the manner of paternoster beads, with ivory columns in the cloister, the garden with trees, bushes and flowers painted accordingly. The roof coloured like orange tile, the rest left in the natural state.
